Disaster relief tsunami victims Japan

The Center for Strategy & Leadership has bought two pieces of art at an art auction aimed to raise money for the tsunami victims in Japan.

Several artists donated a selection of their fine pieces of art for this auction, which was recently held in Japan museum SieboldHuis in Leiden, the Netherlands. The money raised by the auction will be used to help restore the cultural heritage of Sendai, a large city severely damaged by the tsunami and earthquakes of March 2011.

The two pieces of art bought by the Center for Strategy & Leadership (see pictures) both contain opposites and synthesis. However, one must know some details about the Japanese language and culture to see it. Imagination is required too. For example: regarding the artwork ‘Exotic Japan: Geisha and Octopus’, one should know that the Japanese word for ‘octopus’ can also mean (ugly) old, hairless man’.

The pieces of art have been part of the exhibition "Setsuna - Fleeting instant" in Japan museum SieboldHuis, in 2007.
